There is only one thing Bikesdirect sells and that is bikes! You won’t find riding accessories and all the fancy extras that the other online bike retailers we reviewed offer. Bikes may be the only product they feature, but don’t be fooled because they are experts at what they are selling!
As noted above, Bikesdirect only carries bikes, not accessories. The bikes are split into 6 categories: road, mountain, comfort, cruiser, hybrid, and women's. Each category has a number of bikes. Each individual bike has its own product page, with a gallery of product images and a list of detailed specs.
The website in general is simple and easy to navigate with large, high quality photos popping up right on the homepage.
The largest selection of bikes is found under the Road Bike category on the site. Bikesdirect is one of two websites that has a specific category for women's bikes. This section carries about nine different bikes and is a useful feature for female riders. Another useful feature is the ranking process several product categories have of good, better and best. This ranking system makes searching for products much easier as it displays them on one page while showing the price and brand.
Bikesdirect does not have customer reviews for bikes on the site. They do however have a link at the top of the site that will take you to a full page of customer testimonials. This is a great feature no matter what you are shopping for online. Being able to read about the experiences other customers have had with company is a valuable shopping resource.
Another feature is the e-mail sign-up in which you can receive notices about new product arrivals, upcoming deals and the company newsletter.
The Bikesdirect FAQs section and additional questions link provided a full page of useful and detailed information about products and policies.
Bikesdirect only accepts credit card and e-checks as forms of payment. For more detailed payment information you can click on the Order Q and A link under the FAQs section of the site.
While expedited shipping is not an option, Bikesdirect does offer free shipping to the lower 48 states and the Shipping Q and A section does a nice job of explaining shipping policies and procedures. However, a shipping chart would be useful as well.
Shopping online can make many a shopper feel uneasy about the company they are doing business with. Bikesdirect wants to make sure you secure about their company. They have posted a Better Business Bureau button at the top of the site so you can see for yourself what their ratings are and if you would like to continue doing business with them.
Like other online bike stores we reviewed, Bikesdirect offers a money back guarantee for new and unused products.
One downside to the customer service section of their site is that they can only be reached by e-mail and a long distance only telephone numbers.
Bikesdirect is an excellent online store to shop if you’re looking for just a bike. They are able to offer deep discounted prices due to the fact that they don’t have brick and mortar storefront location and they ship directly from the distribution warehouse. One of only reasons we gave them a low ranking was due to their overall product selection and lack of riding accessories and apparel. Don’t let that discourage you from checking them out!
